wackenhut

i guess most people have heard by now of the shenanigans at the u.s. embassy in kabul. fratboys are the same the whole world over.

wackenhut (boss of embassy security miscreants) always seems to get itself mixed up in these sorts of situations. says one retired fbi agent: "it is known throughout the industry that if you want a dirty job done, call wackenhut." dirty? the web is chock-full of claims of the company's malevolent role in everything from el salvador in the 80s to the murder of nuclear plant whistleblower karen silkwood.

the excellent 1995 film by anne lewis, justice in the coal fields, distributed by appalshop, documents the 14-month united mine workers' strike of 1989 against the pittston coal company. who did the strike busting? why, wackenhut, of course.

some friends went to a party at the u.s. embassy a while back. got all dressed up, thinking they'd be meeting the ambassador. arrived to find everyone drunk + engaged in hijinx ranging from beer pong to belching contests. wherever you go, there you are.
