dirigible

i began on thursday to see a mysterious white balloon overhead in kabul's evening sky ...

the next morning, there it was again, on the way to shopping. the drivers said that a giant security camera was inside.

we trailed it past the kabul river basin, where sheep + goats (some hennaed) were drinking from the dregs of water.

and on toward wazir akbar khan . . .

the toronto star says the balloon's name is PERSISTENT THREAT DETECTION SYSTEM. it is meant for surveillance, contains a camera that collects full-motion video + audio, + hovers outta the range of popular local weapons systems. it is, in fact, a tethered aerostat.

on my balcony, i see it on the left, near the mountain, with one light star-bright. hello, PERSISTENT THREAT DETECTION SYSTEM, do you see me? i am below, enjoying the cool breezes on this inaugural evening of our five-day security-imposed tetherdown. please, are you picking up the prayer-songs and the catfights?
